Proprietor: Hans Nef
Description:
We craft wines that represent a stylistic bridge between the Old and New worlds, capturing the finesse associated with European wines while celebrating the bold natural flavors of our estate vineyards in Paso Robles. Here, proprietor Hans Nef and winemaker Matthias Gubler bring their Swiss heritage to California’s Central Coast, where they aim to unite the best of both experiences.
European Inspiration — California Character
Vina Robles is the realization of a long-held dream. It is the collaboration of international talents and recognition of an area of exceptional viticultural promise. It began as the world-wide search by Hans Nef, a Swiss restaurateur and developer, for the perfect place to grow Bordeaux and Rhône varietals.
With the help of California-based friend and business partner, Hans Michel, Paso Robles on California’s Central Coast was selected, as it was rapidly becoming known for the production of wines of noteworthy quality.
As a result, Hans Nef purchased the oak studded land that would become the Vina Robles estate in 1996. After careful site studies and mapping, the appropriate rootstocks and varieties were chosen and a vineyard was planted the following year. In 1998 Viticultural Management, Inc was established as a viticultural services and consultancy company, providing expertise to Central Coast wine grape growers and to Vina Robles. The first estate wines were crafted by Swiss winemaker Matthias Gubler in 1999.

Details:
The new 14,000 square foot Vina Robles hospitality center is located at 3700 Mill Road, three miles east of downtown Paso Robles on California’s Central Coast. The building is situated on 30 acres of property next to Hunter Ranch Golf Course with sweeping views of the surrounding wine country and a blue oak forest. Across from our estate Huerhuero Vineyard, this location showcases the beauty of the Paso Robles wine country while providing convenient access to Highway 46 East, which leads to neighboring wineries and fine dining establishments in downtown Paso Robles.
The Vina Robles hospitality center combines classic California Mission-style design with modern European elegance, including soaring interiors, large picture windows, state-of-the-art technology and a courtyard with fountain. The center was designed by Pults & Associates of San Luis Obispo. Stylistically, it drew from many sources, most notably the historic California Missions, including nearby Mission San Miguel Arcángel and Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.
The interior of the hospitality center consists of three main areas: The tasting room, a retail shop and our banquet facility which is called the Signature Room. The tasting room features a triangular island bar facing a picture window overlooking the nearby Vina Robles Demonstration Vineyard. It also includes a large stone fireplace, comfortable chairs and a small lounge area with a library. The retail area features custom made merchandise islands showcasing fine wines, a selection of gourmet items and an assortment of interesting cook books. There is also a deli section with artisan cheeses and meats.
We broke ground in April of 2006 and the doors opened to the public for the first time on July 26, 2007. Construction was completed under the guidance of Specialty Construction, Inc., San Luis Obispo. The Vina Robles hospitality center is ultimately the culmination of our long-term goal of embracing the entire Paso Robles wine country experience through distinctive wines, estate vineyards and first-class hospitality. A future phase will include a full-service inn to accommodate visitors from around the world.
