Few could grasp the breadth of Peter Yealands vision when he took on the challenge of creating terraced vineyards amongst the vast steeply sloped foothills of Marlborough’s Awatere Valley. While others saw obstacles Peter saw opportunity. His “can do” spirit, innovative “out of the box” thinking and love of the land has resulted in an extraordinary vineyard where excellence in environmental sustainability has framed every aspect of viticulture and winemaking from the very beginning.

Take the Yealands Estate Winery – one of a handful in the world to achieve carboNZerocertTM certification, the largest in New Zealand to do so, and the first to have measured and offset all greenhouse gas emissions since day one. From storm water swales that harvest rainfall, to solar and wind power generation on site – every aspect of the winery design and operation aims to ensure efficient resource use. Out in the vineyard our eco-friendly initiatives are just as impressive. You’ll find more than 20 wetland areas developed to preserve and attract the native species – and grazing amongst the vines, a flock of Babydoll miniature sheep. Too short to reach the fruit (that full-sized sheep will eat) our pint-sized organic-weeders provide year round mowing and pest control, plus a handy dose of fertiliser.

The diverse microclimates and terroirs within the Yealands Estate vineyard create an array of contrasting flavour profiles, textures and structures; all gently overlaid with a characteristic minerality. Grown in some of Marlborough’s harshest growing conditions and nurtured with low impact sustainable methods, our wines are crafted to capture the pure varietal characters. They burst with intense flavours and distinctive complexity and have accordingly received numerous international awards since their inaugural release.

Our sustainability tour is a unique experience which includes a short film presentation in our cellar door theatre, a full winery tour highlighting our sustainability initiatives, complimentary tasting of our full range and an optional outdoor vineyard tour featuring picturesque views across the vineyard and Cook Strait.
