Description:

Mt Difficulty Wines owns some of the oldest vineyards and is one of most respected wineries in the Central Otago region of New Zealand's rugged South Island.

In the early 1990’s the owners of four newly-planted Bannockburn vineyards - Molyneux, Manson’s Farm, Verboeket Estate and Full Circle - shook hands and became Mt Difficulty Wines.

Now comprised of twelve separate vineyards in Bannockburn, Mt Difficulty has the luxury of utilising a variety of different terroirs which produce superb regional and Single Vineyard wines. Mt Difficulty is particularly renowned for its Estate Pinot Noir, but also grows and produces Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc under both the Mt Difficulty and Roaring Meg labels.

Matt Dicey, son of original partner and viticulturist Robin, has been winemaker at Mt Difficulty since 1999, and has been assisted by Roger deGrauw since 2001.

The Cellar Door and Restaurant at Mt Difficulty Wines is located on Felton Road in Bannockburn, within easy reach of Queenstown and Wanaka:
• Wine tasting and sales 10.30am – 4.30pm daily
• Award winning Mt Difficulty and Roaring Meg wines
• Lunch served 12 noon – 3pm daily, bookings essential

Wine List

2011 2010 2009

2011 Mt Difficulty Bannockburn Pinot Gris - Pinot Gris Pinot Grigio - White

Retail Price: $26.00

Pinot_Gris_cropped.jpg

The warm vintage of 2011 has resulted in aromas of white peach and peach blossom mingled with nectarine. The palate displays luscious stone fruit, while the mid palate is full, creamy and well textured. The wine has a rich, mineral driven finish.

2011 Mt Difficulty Target Riesling - Riesling - White

Retail Price: $26.00

Floral and ripe citrus notes compete in the aroma of this Riesling. Citrus characters introduce this wine to the palate and are then joined by ripe tropical melon and a hint of stonefruit. A moderate amount of residual sugar (39gL-1) has been retained to balance the slightly lower acidity from a warmer season. This residual sugar has also fleshed out the mid palate of the wine. This wine will richly reward those who can cellar it.

2011 Mt Difficulty Bannockburn Pinot Rosé - Pinot Noir - Rose

Retail Price: $26.00

Our Rosé displays a lovely red rose petal, whilst the aroma displays savoury red fruits of the forest. On the palate the wine begins with rich, soft red fruits through to a richly textured mid palate; fruit and acid combine nicely to provide a clean finish.

2011 Mt Difficulty Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc - Sauvignon Blanc - White

Retail Price: $26.00

An ideal warm dry autumn has resulted in aromatics of passionfruit and melon with background notes of dried hay. These aromas are replicated as flavours on entry into the palate, moving into a full textured rich mid-palate and finishing with lingering minerality. This wine is ideal for sensible summer evening drinking.

2011 Roaring Meg Central Otago Pinot Gris - Pinot Gris Pinot Grigio - White

Retail Price: $22.00

RM_Pinot_Gris_cropped.jpg

This wine has aromatics reminiscent of a fruit cocktail full of stonefruit, passionfruit and melon. On the palate these are duplicated with lovely rich flavours, a textured mid palate and an off-dry finish.

2011 Roaring Meg Central Otago Sauvignon Blanc - Sauvignon Blanc - White

Retail Price: $22.00

RM_Sauvignon_Blanc_cropped.jpg

Warm summer growing conditions have resulted in a concentrated Sauvignon Blanc in a typical Central Otago style. The wine displays gooseberry flavours intermingled with bell pepper and freshly cut hay; this moves into a full mid-palate and then the wine finishes with lingering passionfruit and rhubarb. This wine is ideal for fun-loving, responsible summer drinking.
